Description/Taste

Dried banana chips are crisp in texture and maintain a full banana flavor. They are produced from ripe bananas, sliced into a 1/4" slices and then are dried. This drying process maintains their yellowish color and provides a crunchy texture with a sweet intense banana taste. Typically they are made from unripe bananas and are either fried or put into a food dehydrator.

Seasons/Availability

Dried banana chips are available year-round.

Current Facts

Bananas rank fourth behind rice, wheat and corn in human consumption and are grown in 130 countries worldwide. India is the largest producer of bananas followed by Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica and the Philippines.

Nutritional Value

Dried banana chips provide a good source of potassium, dietary fiber and vitamins A and C. They have about 230 calories for every 2/3 of a cup.

Applications

Dried banana chips can be eaten as a snack, dipped into chocolate or added into any baked goods to add a sweet banana flavor. Banana chips are popular in Latin, Asian and Caribbean cuisines.

Geography/History

Native to southeastern Asia, the banana has an extensive history and has been consumed by humans ever since its discovery. In 600 B.C. the banana is first written about in Buddhist text and the first banana plantation is known in China dating back to 200 A.D. There are over 300 species of bananas but only 20 of them are grown commercially. The first banana variety was brought to America by early Spanish explorers and was the Plantain banana.
